Itch FM – Dedicated to Hip Hop
London Calling Podcast Yana Bolder
Tower Block Dreams is an exciting documentary series shown on BBC Three. It follows the journeys of two London rappers, Charlie Sloth and Skinnyman, as they work hard to leave their troubled pasts behind and pursue careers in music.
Charlie Sloth grew up in Somers Town, a neighbourhood in North West London. He had some problems with the law when he was young. To stay safe, he decided to leave the “ghetto life” and focus on his music instead.
Skinnyman also had a tough time. He wanted to get back a record deal he had lost because of being involved with drugs. Even though big music companies weren’t interested in him, he didn’t give up. He started making his own records and releasing them himself.
One notable highlight in the series is Skinnyman’s album titled “Council Estate Of Mind,” released in 2004 under Low Life Records. This album stands out for its remarkable production and inclusion of samples from the British film “Made in Britain.”
Tower Block Dreams explores the vibrant underground music scene found in London and Southend council estates. Firstly, the series provides valuable insights into modern inner-city life. It sheds light on aspiring musicians who tirelessly work to establish themselves and break through the barriers they face.
The series takes us to different places like Tottenham, Finsbury Park, Bow, Archway (all in London), and Southend-On-Sea (in Essex). Each episode introduces us to different hip-hop artists from the UK, giving us a good look at the diverse underground music scene.
In the first episode called “Spittin’ and Shottin’,” we learn about the challenges and dreams of Skinnyman and Charlie Sloth. The third episode, “Ghetto on Sea,” features rappers Killer and Gambit. And in “Grimetime to Primetime,” we meet Jaimeson, a really talented producer and rapper in the garage music genre.
